Stockpile Segregation

Overburden Removal
Overburden (also called spoil or waste) is the topsoil lying above the minerals being mined. The overburden is removed and stockpiled for return to the mine pit when mining is complete.

At Landspruit Minerals we recognize that any companies most important asset, is its people. We recognize the management of Safety, Health and the Environment as an integral part of our business which enables our continued existence at our numerous operations.
Our safety and environmental systems are audited annually. The audit protocols are aligned with ISO45001 and ISO14001 to ensure legal compliance with leading international occupational standards as well as DMRE and DOL requirements under the Mine Health and Safety Act 29 of 1996 and the Occupational Health and Safety Act 85 of 1993.
The purpose of an Occupational Health & Safety management system is to provide a framework for managing Occupational Health & Safety risks and opportunities. The aim and intended outcomes of the management systems are to prevent work-related injury and ill health to workers and to provide safe and healthy workplaces; consequently, it is of critical importance for the organization to eliminate hazards and minimize Occupational Health & Safety risks by taking effective preventive and protective measures.

Engaging with our communities
We engage in regular dialogue with local communities and monitor our social impact by gathering detailed feedback. Our community relations activities ensure that stakeholders are informed of Company activities, queries are responded to, and any suggestions regarding projects that have any impact on them are encouraged and received. Communication channels are tailored to each community in order to maximise engagement.
Community investments
We make investments in various social programmes that benefit the communities in our areas of influence; this is a core part of our overall community strategy. In 2021, we invested a total of $6.15m in partnership with national authorities, reaching over 10,000 individuals across our four strategic core themes: education, connectivity, health and nutrition, and socio-economic development.
Local employment
Generating employment opportunities for residents living near our mining operations is a key part of our community contribution. Our objective is to gradually increase the proportion of local employees over time.
Procuring local goods and services
Alongside creating local employment opportunities, we also look for ways to support local businesses. This is a core activity at Landspruit, and one that enables business to generate long-term, tangible socio-economic value for communities.
